GRDN 116 - Sustainable Gardening and Permaculture PROGRAM: Environmental Design CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2019
Introduction to natural and sustainable gardening practices and permaculture design principles. Students will create gardens with an emphasis on plant communities, edible ecosystems, function and aesthetics. Includes studies in water conservation, soil development, wildlife and native gardens, and fruit and vegetable gardening.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expect to:
- Apply sustainable, organic practices and permaculture design principles to garden projects
- Demonstrate an understanding of human, economic, and environmental needs
- Create garden designs for a variety of themes and environmental conditions including wildlife, native, water, drought-tolerant, shade, and wetland gardens
- Develop and prepare basic garden planting plans.
- Design planting communities & edible ecosystems
- Perform soil amendment, rain water and food crop harvest calculations.
- Design functional, creative and aesthetic outdoor environments.
- Use available resources in research.
