Introduction to health data collections methods for health information systems. Study of the datasets used in various health care settings. Overview of the creation and maintenance of health information disease registries and indices. Overview of concepts influencing electronic and computerized patient records and automation of health information management functions.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe healthcare organizations from the perspective of key stakeholders.
- Apply policies, regulations, and standards to the management of information.
- Identify policies and strategies to achieve data integrity.
- Determine compliance of health record content within the health organization.
- Explain the use of classification systems, clinical vocabularies, and nomenclatures.
- Describe components of data dictionaries and data sets.
- Evaluate data dictionaries and data sets for compliance with governance standards.
- Illustrate health care data through graphical representations.
- Define the concepts of managing data.
- Define the legal health record and designated record set.
- Identify the components of risk management related to health information management.
- Identify the impact of policy on health care.
- Explain ethical standards of practice.
