Presents the substantial changes brought about by HIPAA and the growth of electronic health records systems and electronic data networks. Discusses the state laws affecting the use and disclosure of health information and the complex interplay of federal and state health information privacy laws. Addresses the challenging area of how patient information may be used in connection with medical research.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Apply policies, regulations, and standards to the management of information.
- Adhere to privacy and security strategies to health information.
- Describe compliance requirements throughout the health information life cycle.
- Define standards for the exchange of health information
- Apply legal processes impacting health information.
- Demonstrate compliance with external forces.
- Identify the component risk management related to health information management
- Identify the impact of policy on health care.
- Assess ethical standards of practice.
