Introduces general pharmacology for health-related professions including an overview of the history of drugs, federal and state regulations for the prescribing and distribution of therapeutic drugs, drug classifications, routes of administration, and how to use printed and electronic sources of drug information. Emphasis will be given to selected drugs in various drug classifications to develop student understanding of the use, side-effects, contraindications, and potential drug interactions that are unique to each drug.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify drug classifications, drug forms, drug actions, side effects, and emergency procedures.
- Discuss written and electronic medical records
- Identify applicable state and federal regulations.
- Demonstrate ability to use various drug references.
- Demonstrate ability to read and interpret medication orders.
- Assess patient drug profiles based on both prescription and non-prescription medications and disorder being treated.
- Correlate common body system disorders with common medications utilized in the management of the disorders.
