HSPS 120 - Incident Management Systems I


PREREQUISITES: HSPS 102 - Introduction to Public Safety .

Students will learn to emphasize command and control of major department operations at an advanced level, linking operations and safety. Areas of study include National Incident Management System (NIMS), Pre-Incident, Size-up, command systems, Division and Group Functions, Staging, Safety Officer, Command Post, Communications, News Media, Computer Aided Resources. Students will focus on the NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 modules.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the incident management system.
  2. List the command functions in the system.
  3. List the operation function in the system.
  4. List the planning functions in the system.
  5. List the logistics functions in the system.
  6. List the finance functions in the system.
  7. Describe integrated communication.
  8. Describe unified command structure.
  9. Interpret the management span of control.
  10. Describe strategy, tactics, and tasks.
  11. Describe the function of divisions and groups.
  12. List materials and resources for a command post.
  13. Interpret the function of a safety officer.
  14. Describe working with the news media.
  15. Describe the utilization of computer pre-planning and resource banks.
  16. List resource materials in your area that could be used in an incident.
  17. Discuss legal and ethical ramifications of emergency care.
  18. Successfully complete NIMS modules 100, 200, 700 & 800.
  19. Define the NIMS planning (P) process.
  20. List the benefits of multiple agency coordinating systems.
