HSPS 204 - Homeland Security/Public Safety Building and Infrastructure PROGRAM: Homeland Security and Public Safety CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2025
The course examines the elements of construction and design of structures are shown to be key factors when inspecting buildings, preplanning fire operations and operating at emergencies. Additionally, the signs, symptoms, and indicators of partial or total building collapse during fire-fighting operations are studied. Incorporates concepts of resiliency at the regional and community levels, into public health and safety, of building design, building fire safety, classification of building construction, infrastructure systems, and in-house fixed fire protection, and environmental sustainability. The requirements of local, state, and federal government and private sector regulations are covered.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe building construction as it relates to firefighter safety, buildings codes, fire prevention, code inspection, firefighting strategy, and tactics.
- Identify various classifications of building construction.
- Understand theoretical concepts of how fire impacts major types of building construction.
- Classify major types of building construction in accordance with a local/model building code.
- Analyze the hazards and tactical considerations associated with the various types of building construction.
- Explain the different loads and stresses that are placed on a building and their interrelationships.
- Identify the function of each principal structural component in typical building design.
- Differentiate between fire resistance and flame spread, and describe the testing procedures used to establish ratings for each.
- Classify occupancy designations of the building code.
- Identify the indicators of potential structural failure as they relate to firefighter safety.
- Identify the role of a geographic information system (GIS) as it relates to building construction.
