This course prepares students to interact with clients and colleagues in a professional manner. Explores issues commonly experienced while working with youth. This course emphasizes ethical considerations in human services and helps prepare students to secure credentialing in the youth worker field.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Examine personal values, beliefs and philosophy which may influence program evaluation approaches.
- Demonstrate basic communication and computation skills.
- Apply thinking skills to solve problems.
- Discuss the impact in the potential and empowerment of all children and youth.
- Evaluate activities and experiences in programs for school age and youth settings.
- Build positive self-concept in self, school and youth age children, families, and staff.
- Apply pro-social and professional behavior.
- Discuss confidentiality, privilege and the rights of clients.
- Apply principles from the code of ethics in day to day situations with children/youth, families, co-workers, supervisors and the community Describe and discuss the components of professionalism including rights to confidentiality, respect for diversity, and the Code of Ethics.
- Explain when leadership is required to take initiative, maintain control of self and others when necessary, and assume responsibility for actions.
- Identify appropriate personal strengths and behaviors desired when working with youth in a variety of settings/situations.

- INDIANA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIAL:
- This course includes a third-party approved portfolio and will account for 10% of the total course grade. Students will be assessed the current fee in order to apply for the Indiana Youth Development Credential from Indiana YouthPRO. Awarding of the Indiana Youth Development Credential is dependent on the approval of the student’s portfolio by Indiana YouthPRO. This consumable fee will be automatically encumbered upon enrollment in the course.
