An introductory survey of problems, methods, and theories; personality development and motivation, with emphasis on the normal contemporary theories of adjustment and idiodynamics.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify basic constructs in the major personality theories.
- Interpret the history of personality theory through the study of a wide range of theoretical approaches, including the means by which they were developed.
- Conceptualize their own theory of personality based on integrating existing theories.
- Apply learned information about personality development to everyday life.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- The goals of personality psychology
- Basic sources of data in researching personality
- Research methods used to study personality
- The trait approach
- Major theorists and concepts each theorist used to conceptualize personality including the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, social/cultural, biological, and humanistic/existential approaches
- Key psychological processes involved in personality including perception, cognition, motivation, and emotion
- The self in personality, including cross-cultural comparisons of the self
- Personality disorders
