HVAC 120 - Building and Property Maintenance I PROGRAM: Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2023
Instruction will center on carpentry basics, framing, hanging doors and windows, wood and steel frame partitions, steel headers, basic installation principles of insulation, siding, and roofing. Additionally, this course will cover installing trim, drywall, applying caulk, sealant, and painting basics, plumbing tool basics and plumbing safety. Furthermore, students will perform annual maintenance requirements of building systems and equipment as needed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify and demonstrate safe use of common tools used in the building maintenance and plumbing trade.
- Build and frame wood and steel partitions.
- Demonstrate the skills required to size and hang steel headers.
- Demonstrate skills required to hang, repair and finish drywall.
- Demonstrate painting basics and properly applying sealants and caulk.
- Make use of tools and techniques necessary to install trim.
- Utilize principals required to install pre-hung doors and windows.
- Install and repair siding and identify exterior building defects.
- Apply insulation principals and installation techniques.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of roofing inspections and repairs.
- Apply skills necessary to repair and maintain flooring and ceilings.
- Apply HVAC preventative maintenance requirements.
