HVAC 171 - Hydronic Heating Systems


PREREQUISITES: HVAC 101 - Heating Fundamentals .

Students learn the basic components of a hydronic radiant heating system; types of boilers, distribution systems, heat emitters and controls. Students study the properties of water and its use as a heat transfer fluid. Through the use of Radiant Design Software programs, students will learn about the unique elements of heat loss calculations when using radiant heating and will design a radiant heating system for a residential/light commercial building. This course will use lecture, lab and online simulation to prepare students for the nationally recognized certification exam as part of the outcome assessment learning objectives.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to correctly identify various types of boilers, heat emitters, controls and piping components.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to lay out radiant piping systems.
  3. Become proficient in the use of design software.
  4. Determine required system flow rates based on total dynamic head of a piping system.
  5. Understand proper pump sizing through the use of pump performance curves.
  6. Estimate materials required for a residential / light commercial radiant heating system.
  7. Describe various control / mixing strategies to produce different supply water temperatures.
  8. Describe outdoor reset and its applications.
  9. Practice soldering and press-fit pipe joining methods.
  10. Measure Delta P and Delta T on an operational hydronic heating system.
  11. Troubleshoot common system problems related to flow and entrained air.
  12. Attain readiness to take the ESCO HVAC Excellence Employment Ready exam.
