HVAC 200 - Home Automation and Smart Grid Technology PREREQUISITES: INDT 113 - Industrial Electrical I or BCTI 130 - Introduction to Electrical . PROGRAM: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
We are on the forefront of a newer age of the electrical grid. The fifty plus year old Electrical Grid Infrastructure is making way for the integration of a newer and Smarter Electrical Grid which equates to greater energy savings hundreds if not thousands of new jobs. The rapid growth of internet technology and higher speed modems has paved the way for these changes. Home automation technology and smart grid seems to be a perfect match to join smart home technology with smart meter technology. The Smart home uses home automation technology to automate and integrate residential systems such as; computer networking, audio/video, security and surveillance, lighting management, HVAC and water control systems. These modules will be covered in this class.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Express the Importance of OSHA Regulations and Guidelines connected to Energy Auditing and Weatherization techniques and procedures.
- Understand heat transfer; the laws of thermodynamics and how they can affect comfort and energy use in both a positive and negative way.
- Understand the purposes for an Energy Audit and the role of an Energy Auditor.
- Calculate Base loads, Seasonal loads and understand Peak loads and how they all fit into the equation of finance and energy conservation.
- Familiarize Students with the visual inspections of building construction, vapor barriers, air barriers, thermal barriers and material heat transfer rate. (Balloon Framing and Platform Construction).
- Understanding building envelope and thermal characteristics of a building.
- Understanding the basic types and effect of insulation in a building and how R-value and U value relates to the effectiveness of each.
- Properly analyze HVAC Equipment both for safety and for energy efficiency.
- Preform Building Pressure Analysis.
- Test and evaluate duct tightness with the use of a Duct Blaster/Pan Test.
- Experience the use of thermal imaging as a method of accessing hidden defects and air passages within the thermal barrier.
- Understand the need for the awareness of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide Testing.
- Perform Worst Case draft testing and understand how to identify the CAZ (combustion area zone).
- Know the provisions and precautions pertaining to Mold, Lead and Asbestos.
- Water Auditing practices and procedures.
