HVAC 204 - Commercial Refrigeration PREREQUISITES: HVAC 211 - Refrigeration II . PROGRAM: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Examines air conditioning and refrigeration systems for commercial use, including medium and low temperature applications. Includes specialized commercial refrigeration and A/C accessories, metering devices, setting pressure controls for direct temperature control, fan cycling and pump down, commercial ice production, methods of low ambient control, and advanced control arrangements. This course will use lecture, lab and online simulation to prepare students for the nationally recognized certification exam as part of the outcome assessment learning objectives.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate safe practices and procedures in the lab.
- Describe the application and function of specialized commercial refrigeration components covered in the course (both electrical controls as well as refrigeration flow controls).
- Identify common mechanical and electrical controls found on commercial A/C and refrigeration systems covered in this course.
- Describe electric defrost systems and the function of the system components.
- Describe hot gas defrost systems and the function of the system components.
- Analyze operating conditions of medium and low temperature refrigeration systems.
- Adjust the superheat setting of a thermostatic expansion valve.
- Apply the refrigeration cycle to the operation of commercial refrigeration equipment.
- Outline various different methods for charging commercial refrigeration systems having either air-cooled or water-cooled condensers.
- Determine cut-in and cut-out pressure settings for pressure controls for direct temperature control, pump down and condenser fan cycling.
- Compare and contrast the different designs of commercial ice machines covered in this course.
- Describe the different means of initiating harvest cycle, terminating harvest cycle and determining when the storage bin is full that are used on commercial ice machines.
- Describe the different means of low ambient control covered in this course.
- Explain the requirements for evaporator coil TD for low temperature commercial refrigeration, and high humidity and general purpose medium temperature storage. [TD = EAT - BP where EAT is evaporator entering air temperature and BP is evaporator refrigerant boiling point temperature.]
- Attain readiness to take the ESCO HVAC Excellence Employment Ready Exam.
