HVAC 209 - Psychrometrics/Air Distribution PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in MATH 0XX PROGRAM: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Studies the properties of air during the operational variations of temperature and humidity. Discusses the atmospheric conditions and the impact of those conditions on the heating-cooling and ventilation processes and the design of systems for residential and commercial structures. Includes the sizing and configurations of air delivery duct systems and system design methods.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Use a psychrometric chart.
- Define and properly use psychrometric and duct design terminology.
- Identify and explain all components of the psychrometric chart.
- Given any two properties of air, determine other air properties using a psychrometric chart.
- Plot condition points and process lines on the psychrometric charts and describe the process.
- Solve air mixture problems graphically and by calculation.
- Relate air volume, air heat content, air density and air distribution.
- Determine equipment requirements for design conditions.
- Given the heat loss and gain calculated for a structure, design an air distribution system sizing registers, grilles, return duct system and supply duct system.
- Compare system and equipment options - heating and cooling.
- Outline a balance and test procedure for an air distribution system - heating and cooling.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Psychrometric chart
- Finding air properties using psychrometric chart
- Air mixture problems
- Equipment selection
- Air properties
- Test and balance procedures
- Distribution system sizing
