HVAC 210 - Building Science & Analysis PREREQUISITES: HVAC 101 - Heating Fundamentals and INDT 113 - Industrial Electrical I , or BCTI 130 Intro to Electrical and HVAC 203 - Heat Loss and Gain Calculation . This course is an introduction to the science of performing building energy analysis through visual inspections and specialized equipment such as; the Blower Door, Duct Blaster, Infrared Camera, Borescope, Monometer, Anemometer and other inspection and monitoring devices. The course will contain; Laboratory Exercises, Text book study, Power Point, Quizzes and Written Certification Exams. There will also be field instruction and training so that the student can become proficient in the use of the various types of diagnostic equipment.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:- Express the Importance of OSHA Regulations and Guidelines connected to Energy Auditing and Weatherization techniques and procedures.
- Understand heat transfer; the laws of thermodynamics and how they can affect comfort and energy use in both a positive and negative way.
- Understand the purposes for an Energy Audit and the role of an Energy Auditor.
- Calculate Base loads, Seasonal loads and understand Peak loads and how they all fit into the equation of finance and energy conservation.
- Familiarize Students with the visual inspections of building construction, vapor barriers, air barriers, thermal barriers and material heat transfer rate. (Balloon Framing and Platform Construction).
- Understanding building envelope and thermal characteristics of a building.
- Understanding the basic types and effect of insulation in a building and how R-value and U value relates to the effectiveness of each.
- Properly analyze HVAC Equipment both for safety and for energy efficiency.
- Preform Building Pressure Analysis.
- Test and evaluate duct tightness with the use of a Duct Blaster/Pan Test.
- Experience the use of thermal imaging as a method of accessing hidden defects and air passages within the thermal barrier.
- Understand the need for the awareness of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide Testing.
- Perform Worst Case draft testing and understand how to identify the CAZ (combustion area zone).
- Know the provisions and precautions pertaining to Mold, Lead and Asbestos.
- Water Auditing practices and procedures.
