HVAC 212 - Advanced HVAC Controls

Covers control systems beyond ordinary residential and single zone commercial applications. Includes solid state controls, 0-10 volt DC and 4-20 milliamp control signals, zoning controls, modulating controls, low ambient controls, heat recovery and energy management controls, economizer controls, 3-phase motor protection modules, variable frequency drives [VFDs], remote sensing electronic thermostats, electronically commutated DC motor control, Direct Digital Control [DDC] systems, multiple-stage heating/cooling controls, PLC control of HVAC/R equipment and pneumatic controls.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safe practices and procedures.
  2. Recognize and describe solid state controls such as solid state “demand” defrost controls, anti-short cycling devices, furnace integrated circuit boards [ICBs] and 3-phase motor protection monitors.
  3. Explain basic concepts associated with Direct Digital Control [DDC].
  4. Recognize and describe special controls used in economizers, heat reclaim and energy management systems.
  5. Recognize and describe pneumatic control systems such as those used for induction units and variable air volume units.
  6. Explain how variable frequency drives control motor speed.
  7. Explain the difference between 0-10 volt DC and 4-20 milliamp control signals.
  8. Outline the various methods of zoning covered in this course.
  9. Describe the use of PLCs in HVAC/R equipment control.
  10. Compare and contrast the various low ambient control systems covered in this course.
