HVAC 214 - Applied Design


PROGRAM: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Provides students with the opportunity to design and lay out complete HVAC systems.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safe practices and procedures.
  2. Demonstrate HVAC drafting skills [mechanical and/or CAD].
  3. Employ appropriate HVAC symbols in drafting work and shop drawings.
  4. Outline airflow principles including relating CFM of air flow to external static pressure.
  5. Given heat loss and gain data on a structure, determine CFM of airflow requirements for each room in the building.
  6. Design a duct system including duct size, return air grille selection, and supply register selection that will deliver the required CFM per room.
  7. Lay out piping systems — fuel, condensate, refrigeration, and hot/chilled water.
  8. Describe the types of supply and return duct systems covered in this course.
  9. Draw [using either CAD or drafting tools] complete duct system.
  10. Create HVAC detailed drawings of specific system components.
  11. Lay out a complete hydronic system.
  12. Design and layout ventilation systems.
  13. Describe air handling units and how to represent them in a working drawing.
  14. Describe heat recovery ventilation systems and to represent them in a working drawing.
  15. List recommended foot per minute air velocities for return, main and branch ducts for different types of structures.
  16. Apply appropriate HVAC codes.

  • Making blueprints and shop drawings
  • Airflow principles
  • Duct design principles
  • Relationship between CFM of airflow to external static pressure.
