HVAC 216 - Advanced Heat Pump Systems

This course reviews the refrigeration cycle as it applies to the heat pump system and different types of heat pump systems. Covers procedures used to diagnose electrical, control, mechanical and refrigeration problems common to water source, geothermal and ductless heat pump systems. Course includes sizing, design and installation of both open and closed loop geothermal heat pumps. Also covered are specialized heat pump systems utilizing variable capacity, inverter technology and variable refrigerant flow technologies.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safe practices and procedures.
  2. Interpret and utilize pictorial and schematic diagrams.
  3. Identify different types of water source heat pumps in relation to their source of heat.
  4. Diagram refrigerant flow through a water source heat pump in both the heating and cooling mode; identifying Refrigerant condition and typical pressures and temperatures.
  5. Diagram variable refrigerant flow through a heat pump providing simultaneous heating and cooling.
  6. Explain in detail the inverter technology found in modern heat pump systems.
  7. Identify and troubleshoot electrical control system components covered in this course.
  8. Identify and troubleshoot common refrigeration system components covered in this course.
  9. Describe the typical thermostats used with ductless and geothermal heat pumps.
  10. Given the heat loss and heat gain of a structure, size a closed loop geothermal heat pump and back-up electric heat.
  11. Compare/contrast different types of heat pumps: ductless and geothermal and their applications today.
