A general understanding of common types of electric motors, extending from the small shaded pole fan motors to the large three-phase motors. Topics covered will include motor theory, magnetism and how it affects motor rotation, motor starting components and protective devices for motor circuits. Heat dissipation from a motor, motor slippage, how they are wired to obtain different speeds, and how capacitors affect a motor circuit will be included. This course will use lecture, lab, and online simulation to prepare students for certification assessment through (SACA) Smart Automation Certification Alliance.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

- Identify and describe methods for controlling motor speeds. [a]
- Appropriately select and install motors. [b, i]
- Demonstrate methods of starting motors utilized in industrial applications. [e]
- Identify various types of motor protective devices used in industry. [e]
- Analyze ladder diagrams for motor circuits. [a, b]
- Diagnose and troubleshoot motors. [a, b, e]
- Identify various types of three-phase motor designs and applications. [e]
- Demonstrate methods for reversing AC and DC motors. [b, e]
- Explain the methods for accelerating and braking motors. [a, b]
- Configure and operate Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for 2-, 3-, and 4-wire motor control applications using wiring diagrams, schematics, and keypad programming. [a,f]
- Interpret and troubleshoot VFD system faults by analyzing error codes and applying appropriate recovery procedures. [a,f]
- Interpret the operation of single-phase and three-phase transformers by applying knowledge of magnetic induction, turns ratio calculations, and voltage/current relationships, and demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and test transformers using appropriate tools and procedures. [b,c]
- Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents. [b, e]
- Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]
- Recall fundamental content to meet/exceed the cut-score for the SACA (Smart Automation Certification Alliance) C-202 Electric Motor Control Systems 1 - Silver Certification. [h]
- Demonstrate skills to obtain the SACA C-202 Electric Motor Control Systems 1 - Gold Certification at a 100% of skill standard. [a, i]
