INDT 111 - Rigging

Introduces the proper techniques of moving industrial machinery and equipment. Emphasis is placed on proper installation, inspection, safety requirements, and load calculations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the basic characteristics of fiber rope, wire rope, and chain. [b]
  2. Identify and describe the functions of end fittings and connectors. [b]
  3. Identify and describe the uses of slings. [b]
  4. Explain how to inspect: Wire rope, chains, synthetic web slings, hooks, shackles, and sockets. [b]
  5. Identify the various types of derricks and cranes. [b]
  6. Describe hand signals commonly used for different types of cranes. [d,f]
  7. Explain how to estimate the size and weight of a load and how to find a load’s center of gravity. [e]
  8. Identify the various types of knots. [a]
  9. Describe the basic rigging safety precautions and the basic steps involved in planning a rigging job. [c]
  10. Describe how to select the proper equipment for a rigging job. [e]
  11. Define mechanical advantage. [a]
  12. Describe the use and application of hoists, jacks, and winches. [e]
  13. Describe the effects of sling angles and hitch patterns on a sling’s lifting capacity. [e]
  14. Describe how a load leveler can be used to balance a load. [e]
  15. Describe rigging components and identify basic inspection checks that should be made to them. [e]
  16. Describe how to read and interpret lifting capacity charts used in heavy lifting. [f]
  17. Describe load-balancing techniques commonly used during heavy lifting. [e]
