INDT 157 - Introduction to Ceramics

This course will provide an overview of the basic structures, properties, processing, and applications for ceramic materials. Subject matter will be relevant to industrial applications and processing.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This course aims to give fundamental understanding of:

  1. Discuss modern ceramic materials, their structure, properties, applications, potential uses and limitations.
  2. Determine the factors that render ceramics unique and different from other materials such as metals or polymers.
  3. Recognize and describe common bonding/structure/property relationships in ceramics.
  4. Define the key electrical, magnetic, and optical applications of ceramic materials.
  5. Distinguish the basics of ceramic processing, including sintering theory and grain growth.
  6. Analyze finished ceramic products in order to ascertain conformity issues and defects.
  7. Employ safe operating procedures related to various types of ceramic materials and related components.
