INDT 203 - Machine Maintenance and Installation

Examines the procedures for the removal, repair and installation of machine components. The methods of installation, lubrication practices, and maintenance procedures for industrial machinery are analyzed. Also presented are the techniques involved in the calibration and repair of mechanical devices and the practice in computations pertaining to industrial machinery.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Perform the rigging and lifting of industrial components. [e,f]
  2. Describe the principles of mechanical power transmission systems. [f]
  3. Make speed, torque, and pitch calculations. [f]
  4. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of belt, gear, chain and coupling drives. [f]
  5. Install and align belts, gears, chains and couplings correctly. [b,e]
  6. Recognize basic seal and packing types and explain their general purpose and installation steps. [f]
  7. Identify plain and anti-friction bearings and describe their basic uses in machinery. [b,e]
  8. Identify common gear drive systems, their components, and basic functions.[b,e]
  9. Analyze failures due to heat, vibration and observation. [b,e]
  10. Selection of proper lubricants for the correct use, in specific applications. [e]
  11. Installing and maintaining components safely. [c]
  12. Follow conventional industrial safety practices. [c]
  13. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents. [b,e,].
  14. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]
