INDT 240 - Manufacturing Coatings and Surface Finish

PROGRAM: Industrial Technology
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
LAB HOURS MIN: 2
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019

Introduces the student to the industrial coatings technology industry from the manufacture of the materials used to make the coatings, to the application and finishing of the coatings serving the Aviation, Energy, Printing, and Steel industries. Describes the various types of coating equipment, process operations, and safety.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Determine the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for each process operation. [c]
  2. Describe the use of a JSA (Job Safety Analysis) procedure. [f]
  3. Explain the basic steps required to apply a coating to a part. [f]
  4. Utilize common measurement equipment such as micrometers, depth gages, profilometer, and digital scales. [a]
  5. Demonstrate the basic understanding of operating a thermal spray control panel. [a]
  6. Define the basic operation of a powder feed device. [a,f]
  7. Perform a plasma torch overhaul. [b]
  8. Explain the function of a grit blast surface preparation process. [f]
  9. Describe the function of coating masking and determine the difference between usable versus non-usable masks. [f]
  10. Read and interpret the Job Instructions used to process a part from start to finish. [f]
  11. Perform assigned job tasks in a safe and professional manner. [c,d]
