MEAS 219 - Medical Assisting Laboratory Technique

This advanced course prepares students to understand and perform entry-level basic laboratory procedures. This includes fundamental principles of medical lab practice, disposal of biohazard materials, specimen collection, use of methods of quality control, urinalysis testing, chemistry testing, hematology testing, immunology testing, microbiology testing, and discussion of follow-up testing results.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Identify Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests associated with common diseases. (IC9)
- Identify quality assurance practices in healthcare. (IC11)
- Record laboratory test results into the patient’s record. (IIP2)
- Perform the following procedures (IP2)
- Venipuncture (IP2 b.)
- Capillary Puncture (IP2 c.)
- Perform a quality control measure. (IP10)
- Collect specimens and perform: (IP11)
- CLIA waived hematology test
- CLIA waived chemistry test
- CLIA waived urinalysis
- CLIA waived immunology test
- CLIA waived microbiology test
- Identify normal and abnormal results as reported in: (IIC3)
