MEDL 206 - Hematology Techniques II

This course continues the study of principles and procedures in hematology. It introduces procedures which lie outside those routinely performed. Continues cell differentiation, with emphasis upon early and less commonly encountered abnormal cells with associated special stains. Includes clinicopathologic correlations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Classify severe and moderate anemia by hemoglobin values
  2. List and define the parameters of the CBC (complete blood count) used to diagnose anemia.
  3. State the “rule of three” to hemoglobin and hematocrit.
  4. Classify anemia by cell size and hemoglobin content.
  5. Classify anemias by morphology and RBC indices and list possible causes of each.
  6. List and define size, shape, and stain variations in red cells, their causes and conditions in which they are seen.
  7. List and define variations in red cell distribution, their causes and conditions in which they are seen.
  8. List and define RBC inclusions, their causes in which they are seen and state the name of the stains used to identify each.
  9. Perform abnormal differentials for RBC and WBC populations.
  10. Differentiate between malignant and benign neoplasms.
  11. Compare terms leukemia and lymphoma
  12. Discuss the variations in incidence of leukemia in different racial, ethnic, and age groups.
  13. Name and describe the classification systems used for the MDS, MPD, and the leukemias
  14. Compare and contrast the laboratory findings in acute and chronic leukemias.
  15. List 5 cytochemical stains used to differentiate leukemias, their site of action, typical staining pattern and the cells identified by each.
  16. List presenting clinical features associated with acute leukemia.
  17. List the three modes of treatment for acute leukemia.
  18. List 2 clinical conditions that indicate the need for bone marrow studies and give examples of each.
  19. State the sites used for bone marrow aspiration for the adult population.
  20. Explain the role of the laboratorian during a bone marrow procedure.
  21. Describe the preparation of the marrow aspirate for laboratory examination
  22. State the purpose of each type of smear of specimen obtained.
  23. Define M:E ratio and explain what can cause an increase or decrease in it.

  25. Evaluate patient results from case study for anemias, leukemias, and lymphomas
