MORT 207 - Funeral Service Practicum I
PREREQUISITES: MORT 105 - Embalming Theory I and MORT 106 - Anatomy for Funeral Service

One laboratory session per week for one semester in an appropriate mortuary setting. Practical experience in all phases of funeral service including embalming, funeral directing, and funeral home operation. Students are placed in local funeral homes to work under the direct supervision of qualified licensed preceptors to gain knowledge of procedures used in embalming human remains for funeral services.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the body systems, with special emphasis on the circulatory system, to the degree needed to give a working basis for studies in such related subjects as embalming, pathology, public health, and restorative art.
- Specify representative chemicals in embalming fluids (arterial, cavity and accessory) and give their respective functions.
- Describe the basic theories and laws of chemistry and relate their importance to both the living and deceased.
- Identify and demonstrate the use of standard embalming instruments, machines and accessories.
- Describe prior to, and during the procedure of embalming, the problems presented by disease processes and etiological factors.
- Identify potentially harmful chemicals used in the preparation room, and the precautions to be taken with each.
- Relate specific types of restoration to the correct embalming procedures.
- Select, from a specified cosmetic medium, the correct colorants (compounds) to achieve a natural appearance under various conditions.
- Exhibit a skill in modeling which reflects his ability to restore a problem case.
- Demonstrate principles of funeral directing.
