MPRO 122 - Mechatronics Electrical Systems PROGRAM: Manufacturing Production and Operations CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Introduces the fundamentals of electricity and control systems used in manufacturing and mechatronic systems. Concepts covered will include; electrical safety, AC/DC circuits, electrical measurements, circuit analysis, transformers, relay controls, timer applications, electrical terminology, types of sensors, interpretation of electrical symbols, and ladder diagrams.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the hazards associated with automated machines and determine appropriate safety methods for working around electrical control systems.
- Define the following terms: voltage, resistance, direct current, alternating current, and power.
- Identify, analyze and solve electrical quantities in a series, parallel, and series-parallel circuit.
- Perform voltage, current, and resistance measurements using the proper measurement devices.
- Use Ohm’s law to calculate electrical quantities in a circuit.
- Use Kirchhoff’s laws to solve electrical quantities in a circuit.
- Explain the basic principles and operation of transformers, resistors, inductors, and capacitors.
- Identify electrical components commonly found on schematic diagrams.
- Identify and design logic circuits using relay controls.
- Identify and design a sequential control circuit using relays and limit switches.
- Identify and design timer controlled circuits.
- Design and control circuits in both auto and manual modes of operation.
- Identify and determine the proper types of sensor controls needed for machine operations.
