MTTC 105 - Abrasive Processes I PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: MTTC 101 - Introduction to Machining .
PROGRAM: Machine Tool Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2025
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and operations of surface grinding. Upon completion, students will demonstrate safe and effective operation of grinding machinery and the ability to produce precision-ground components. This course incorporates mandatory certification assessment for the National Institute of Metalworking Skills Grinding I certification.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Interpret engineering data presented in graphs or charts, algebraic expressions and proportional relationships.
- Demonstrate the correct use of abrasive tooling, special accessories, and required testing equipment.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance procedures.
- Apply tolerance limits and fits to meet abrasive processing requirements.
- Identify and demonstrate correct setup and operation of abrasive operations.
- Solve mathematical problems related to abrasive processing operations.
- Verbally describe and interpret data obtained from engineering drawings.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Operation of surface grinder
- Instruction in the proper use and selection of abrasive wheels
- Proper procedures for balancing and dressing grinding wheels
- Use of tooling for the sharpening of drill bits
- Instruction related to determining blueprints and drawings for the purposes of machining components to obtain a finished product
- Guidance in the cleaning and lubrication of grinding equipment
- Use of precision measurement devices; calipers, micrometers, scales, and height gages
- Instruction in transverse and plunge grinding
- Instruction in the use of formulas associated with the computation of feed and speeds of related machine shop equipment
- Use of surface plates in making precision measurements
- Proper procedure in grinding high speed tooling
GRADING POLICY Grading Rubric for NIMS Certification Exams:
