MTTC 209 - CNC Lathe Programming PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: MTTC 107 OR Program Chair Approval
PROGRAM: Machine Tool Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2025
Introduces two axis CNC lathe programming. Develops the theory of programming in the classroom with applications of the program accomplished on industry-type machines. Studies terminology of coordinates, cutter paths, angle cutting, and linear and circular interpolation.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Consistently demonstrate proper programming format and techniques for manual CNC programming, to machine parts without error.
- Choose appropriate tooling for specified material and machining operation.
- Calculate proper feeds and speeds for optimal tool life, machining time, and part finish.
- Analyze G and M code programs using machine graphics display, verification software, or CAD-CAM verification.
- Complete appropriate documentation for safety, set-up, and quality control purposes.
- Create process plans and routings for multiple machining operations.
- Properly and safely set-up and operate CNC milling machines.
- Use manual, manual data input, and automatic operation modes.
- Troubleshoot program and machining problems..

- Planning for programming CNC lathes.
- Horizontal slant bed lathe configuration.
- Programming from print and sample parts for the lathe.
- Linear and circular interpolation for the lathe.
- Lap and canned cycle modes for bar facing/turning/boring.
- Tooling for CNC lathes.
- Work holding examples.
- Edit/troubleshoot programming and process errors.
- Process, programming, set-up, and operating documentation for CNC lathe manufacturing.
- Geometry/wear offsets.
