NGAS 101 - Fundamentals of Natural Gas PROGRAM: Energy Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Introduces the characteristics and hazards of natural gas, prevention of accidental ignition, recognizing emergency conditions, inside and outside leak investigation methods and detection, instrumentation, carbon monoxide, and basic external corrosion prevention.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Develop the skills to understand the processing technologies associated with the production of natural gas. [a, e, g]
- Develop an understanding of the gas laws. [a, e, g]
- Explain and perform leak testing on natural gas lines. [a, e, f, g, i]
- Describe the molecular structure, process theory, and terminology during the production of natural gas. [a, e, f, g, i]
- Identify the equipment and auxiliary systems which support the production and processing of natural gases. [a, e, g, i]
- Demonstrate proper safety techniques used in working with natural gas. [a, e, f, g, i]
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Hazards of natural gas
- External leak testing for natural gas leaks
- Reading and interpretation of testing instrumentation
- Carbon monoxide testing and detection
- Corrosion testing, identification, and prevention
- Safety requirements for working with natural gas
- Safe work practices
