Allows the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to provide ethical, culturally competent, and holistic care for individuals experiencing mental health disorders. Demonstrates the role of the Associate Degree Nurse in utilizing the nursing process as the framework for problem solving and critical thinking in the application of nursing care in the mental health setting.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability in relation to legal and ethical issues which may be encountered in the mental health setting. (SLO 1)
- Function effectively within the inter/intraprofessional team to achieve safe and effective care based on best practice standards and inclusive of individual patient culture, diversity, ethnicity, and values. (SLO 1, 5, 6)
- Apply the nursing process, utilizing evidence based practice, and integration of electronic health records, to the care of individuals experiencing mental health disorders. (SLO 3, 4)
- Demonstrate effective communication techniques, including electronic communication, to interact with patients, their significant others, and members of the inter/intraprofessional team. (SLO 3, 5)
- Function effectively within the scope of practice of the associate degree nurse in delivering quality, patient-centered care in mental health settings. (SLO 1, 2)
- Apply the principles of individualized teaching and learning concepts utilized in the care of patients experiencing alterations in mental health. (SLO 5)
- Apply principles of safe, effective pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to address patient care needs in the mental health setting. (SLO 1, 4)
