PARM 231 - Pediatric Care Certification
PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course including CPR for Adult, Child, Infant and AED.

Provides healthcare providers with sufficient knowledge to initiate advanced life support in a pediatric emergency, either in or out of hospital. Enhances the students’ skills in evaluation and management of infant and child medical and traumatic emergencies, including respiratory and cardiac emergencies and cardiac arrest. Course will comply with current curricula from PALS or PEPP.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Perform pediatric assessments of a seriously ill or injured infant or child.
- Utilize the assess-categorize-decide-act approach to managing pediatric emergencies.
- Recognize and manage a child in cardiac and/or respiratory distress.
- Recognize and manage a child with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
- Describe effective behaviors of a resuscitation team.
- Describe effective team dynamics and their effect on resuscitation outcomes.
- Demonstrate effective respiratory management skills.
- Demonstrate proper use of oxygen delivery devices, suctioning, oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal airway, bag-mask ventilation and endotracheal intubation.
- Demonstrate appropriate electrical therapy, including defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion.
- Discuss intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration.
- Perform resuscitation simulations on an infant and child.
- Role play team leading and team member in simulated cases.
