This course further develops advanced DSLR or mirrorless camera skills and photographic vision utilizing Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and/or Adobe Lightroom. Special attention is placed on practice and theory. The course introduces special techniques and digital processes while refining printing and processing skills. It will also emphasize good composition and the use of photography as a communication tool. Appropriate presentation and sequencing of imagery are stressed, along with historical examples that provide background for understanding the medium.
REQUIRED SOFTWARE:
This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without using Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Apply the zone system to black and white photography using the info palette and histograms.
- Effectively execute assignments starting with pre-visualization and ending with a properly exposed digital file and/or high-quality digital prints.
- Demonstrate the ability to use filters and a tripod with the camera.
- Demonstrate the ability to make decisions about compositions, focus, depth of field, and shutter speeds.
- Demonstrate advanced tonal controls, image adjustments, and digital workflow processes utilizing Adobe Photoshop, Camera Raw, and/or Adobe Lightroom.
- Effectively operate DSLR or mirrorless cameras capable of manual controls to create photos with conceptual ability.
- Demonstrate the critical and aesthetic skills necessary to effectively assess photographic images.
- Produce photographs that exhibit a meaningful story and conceptual thinking ability.
- Present orally a project to your peers, clients, faculty, or jury.
