PHOT 203 - Professional Portraiture

REQUIRED SOFTWARE:

This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without the use of Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software. Review the IvyService & Support Knowledge Base article: How to Access Adobe Software at Home to learn how to access this software.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of studio portrait lighting including: short and broad, as well as split, loup, Rembrandt, and paramount lighting.
2. Work effectively with both strobe and hot lights in creating portraits.
3. Demonstrate professional color choices for subjects.
4. Demonstrate the ability to create a mood in portraiture.
5. Create portraits which succeed in competing with other area professionals.
6. Create marketable portraits.
7. Demonstrate ability to work effectively with various background materials and props for studio and location portraiture.
8. Demonstrate ability to work with natural lighting and outdoors in creating portraits.
9. Exhibit knowledge of photographic composition in created work.
10. Work effectively with both traditional and digital media to create portraits.
11. Demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of successful poses.
12. Demonstrate knowledge of corrective portraiture.
13. Demonstrate a personal style of working with portraiture.
14. Demonstrate an ability to work with traditional and nontraditional portrait methods.
15. Demonstrate the ability to direct subjects in a professional manner.
