PPTC 101 - Power Plant Fundamentals

PROGRAM: Energy Technology
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019

An introduction to power plant systems emphasizes the use of schematics and diagrams in discussing power plant systems and identifying major components including boilers, turbines, generators, condensers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment. Also includes the study of pre-heaters, feed water, superheat, and reheat systems. Plant safety training and workplace procedures will also be emphasized.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. List the major components found in a power plant. [a, b, e, g, i]
  2. Describe the role of each component of a power plant as it relates to generating power. [a, b, f, g, i]
  3. Describe the various personnel at a power plant and their role in the organization. [a, b, e, g, h, i]
  4. Draw a block diagram of a power plant. [a, b]
  5. Describe the flow of water/steam through a basic steam cycle. [a, b, e, f, g, i]
  6. Describe the flow of air and gas through a boiler. [a, b, e, g]
