Introduces the study of electrical equipment and systems used in power plants. Topics include three phase power, generators, motors, transformers, and switching gear. NEC and NESC Code requirements, automatic and manual motor controls, variable speed drives, and circuit protection will also be studied.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe the fundamentals of power plant electrical systems. [a, b, e, f, g]
- Explain the principles and operation of electrical machinery. [a, b, e, f, g]
- Describe the function of electrical transformers and switching gear. [a, b, f, g]
- Identify and describe methods for controlling motor speed. [a, b, e, g]
- Describe the various types of electrical motors used in a power plant. [a, b, e, f, g]
- Demonstrate methods of starting motors utilized in a power plant. [a, b, e, g]
- Explain the methods used for reversing AC and DC motors. [a, b, e, f, g]
- Identify various types of three-phase motor designs and applications. [a, b, e, g, i]
- Explain the methods used for accelerating and braking electrical motors. [a, b, f, g]
- Explain the various methods used to provide circuit protection. [a, b, f, g, i]
- Describe the principles and operation of an electrical generator. [a, b, f, g]
- Demonstrate proper safety practices and procedures when operating and maintaining electrical equipment. [a, b, e, f, g, h]
