PTAS 107 - Kinesiology


PREREQUISITES: PTAS 101 - Introduction to the Physical Therapist Assistant  and APHY 101 - Anatomy and Physiology I

Introduces the physical therapist assistant student to the science of kinesiology. By definition, kinesiology is the study of movement. Studies human movement and brings together the fields of anatomy, physiology, physics, and geometry. Prerequisite knowledge of skeletal and muscular anatomy and physiology is necessary. Class will consist of lectures, demonstrations, and student participation in locating, observing, and palpating bony prominences and muscles. Much of kinesiology requires independent study to memorize origin, insertion, action, and innervation of muscles. The knowledge gained in this course is an integral part of a student’s preparation for the practice of physical therapy as a physical therapist assistant.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

7A2. Body system interactions, health, and surgical conditions across the life span, movement sciences, pain and pain experiences, and psychological aspects of health and disability.

BODY SYSTEMS:

  • Musculoskeletal:
    • Identify the principles of simple machines and forces and their relationship to physical therapy interventions
    • Classify joints as fibrous, cartilaginous, or synovial
    • Review the planes and axes of primary and component motions of the joints of the upper extremities (UE), lower extremities (LE), and spine
    • Identify joint osteology and arthrology components
    • Identify muscle nomenclature by shape, structure, function, and characteristics
    • Identify the origin, insertion, action, and innervation of skeletal muscles
    • Define muscle tone and optimal length tension
    • Define common disorders of the musculoskeletal system seen in physical therapy
  • Cardiovascular:
    • Identify joint angiology
  • Neurological:
    • Identify the components of neural anatomy: spinal cord anatomy, divisions of the central and peripheral nervous system, arterial supply, and brachial and lumbosacral plexi
    • Identify dermatome and myotome levels supplied by given spinal nerve roots
  • Respiratory:
    • Identify respiratory system anatomical structures: skeletal, muscular, and neurological structures and their contribution to inspiration and expiration

7D1. Implementation of the plan of care established by the physical therapist:

  • Determine when an intervention is inappropriate
    • Describe the principles and contraindications of manual muscle testing
    • Describe the procedures and contraindications of goniometry
    • Describe the principles and contraindications for therapeutic exercise.
    • Describe the principles and contraindications for proper patient positioning.
  • Select interventions as determined by the supervising PT based on clinical data, goals, and intended outcomes.
    • Describe the indications for manual muscle testing
    • Describe the indications for goniometry
    • Describe the indications for therapeutic exercise.
    • Describe the indications for proper patient positioning.
    • Provide appropriate interventions within the confines of the given plan of care in a patient simulated scenario.
  • Modify, adjust, and discontinue interventions based on the patient response and clinical data in collaboration with the supervising PT
    • Recognize the need for modifications during interventions and data collection of musculoskeletal rehabilitation

7D2. Select and perform components of data collection using appropriate tests and measures for all phases of PT interventions in:

  • Pulmonary system
    • Review breathing patterns, including musculoskeletal engagement
  • Neurological system
    • Identify spinal nerve root levels for dermatomes or myotomes in quick screening
  • Musculoskeletal system
    • Differentiate palpable bony landmarks in simulated patient scenarios
    • Identify the primary and secondary curvatures of the spine
    • Report the landmarks for typical posture from anterior, posterior, and lateral views
    • Identify atypical postures of the spine
    • Identify postural alignment for given positions
    • Locate surface anatomy of skeletal bony prominences, soft tissue structures, and muscles of the UE, LE, and spine
    • Identify normal joint active range of motion measurements of the UE, LE, and spine
    • Define the normal and abnormal end feels for each joint
    • Detect end feels for major joint structures of the human body
    • Identify the associated motions of the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints, including scapulohumeral rhythm and scaption
    • Discover the appropriate and safe osteokinematic motions of each joint in simulated patient scenarios, reflecting the scope of a physical therapist assistant
    • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and safe goniometry for given joints in simulated patient scenarios within the scope of a physical therapist assistant
    • Define the grades of manual muscle testing
    • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and safe manual muscle testing for given muscles in simulated patient scenarios within the scope of a physical therapist assistant
    • Identify alternative muscle performance data collection strategies
    • Identify the components of the Traditional and Rancho Los Amigos phases of gait
    • Define and identify compensated and uncompensated gait patterns
    • Determine abnormalities through gait analysis
  • Grown and human development
    • Acknowledge alternative strength testing strategies over the lifespan

7D3. Select and perform physical therapy interventions for each of the following as identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist to achieve goals and outcomes:

  • Pulmonary conditions
    • Apply effective breathing interventions for improved respiration
  • Neurological conditions
    • Identify strategies for maintaining balance and proper posture
  • Musculoskeletal conditions
    • Define and identify motions in open and closed kinetic chains
    • Identify skills/activities used in assessing functional range of motion
    • Apply postural training techniques
    • Identify muscle contraction types: isometric, eccentric, concentric, isotonic, and Isokinetic
    • Create effective therapeutic exercises for given muscles in simulated patient scenarios, reflecting the scope of a physical therapist assistant

7D4. Delivery of Physical Therapy Services: Complete documentation according to legal framework of one’s jurisdiction, practice setting, and regulating agencies.

  • Report appropriate components of musculoskeletal rehabilitation data collection techniques for effective documentation

7D6. Delivery of Physical Therapy Services: Educate others using teaching methods that are commensurate with the needs of the learner, including participation in the clinical education of students, incorporate cultural humility and social determinants of health when providing patient and/or caregiver education.

  • Dramatize patient education in simulated patient scenarios with an emphasis on therapeutic rehabilitation techniques

7D7. Health Care Activities: Participate in efforts to ensure patient and health care provider safety

  • Apply body mechanics and lifting techniques for self and simulated patient for safe intervention in simulated patient scenarios
