RDTH 120 - Sectional Anatomy and Imaging Principles

PREREQUISITES: APHY 101 - Anatomy and Physiology I

Admission to the Radiation Therapy Program
PROGRAM: Radiation Therapy
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 2
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 32
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2025

Content is designed to provide students with an introduction to cross-sectional anatomy of the human body and principles related to appropriate imaging modalities. This course will demonstrate the clinical application as well as anatomical terminology. A focus on Computed Tomography with an overview of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Positron Emission Tomography, and Ultrasound will be introduced. Case studies will be presented in order to apply the knowledge of sectional anatomy and imaging modalities with what is seen during clinical rotations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between the various imaging modalities associated with cross-sectional anatomy.
  2. Define Transverse, Coronal, Sagittal, and Oblique imaging.
  3. Identify anatomical structures in the human body in various cross-sectional planes.
  4. Describe the components of the CT imaging system.
  5. List the functions of a CT scanner.
  6. Describe in detail the CT computer data processing steps.
  7. State the common controls found on CT operator consoles and explain the purpose of each.
  8. Explain the QA process for a CT scanner.
  9. Identify artifacts most commonly affecting cross-sectional imaging modalities.
  10. Explain how artifacts can be reduced or avoided.

COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -

  • Cross-Sectional Anatomy
  • Imaging for Cross-Sectional Anatomy
  • CT Instrumentation
  • CT Procedures
