Content is designed to provide the student with basic concepts of patient care specific to radiation therapy including consideration of physical and psychological conditions. Handling of patients, patient examinations, asepsis, local and systemic reactions, nutrition and medications are discussed. Factors influencing patient health during and following a course of radiation will be identified.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Analyze the radiation therapist Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics for clinical application.
- Explains Bill of Rights for Patients.
- Differentiate between the roles and responsibilities of health care team members treating cancer patients.
- Examine different psychological aspects of dying.
- Explain the dynamics of communicating with the cancer patient and family.
- Recognize radiation side effects and complications and select the appropriate medical intervention.
- Identify factors that influence a patient’s emotional responses.
- Formulate content for answers to questions frequently asked by patients.
- Assess the physical condition of the patient before, during and after treatment delivery.
- Discuss the principles of medication administration.
- Recognize common medications and explain their actions and side effects.
- Evaluate a patient for an adverse reaction to medication.
- Describe emergency response procedures.
- Describe the proper care of patients with tubes.
- Provide patient education for medical procedures.
- Assess the nutritional status of the cancer patient to provide nutritional education or intervention.

- Introduction to cancer nursing
- Overview of cancer
- The nature of cancer
- Cancer prevention
- Cancer screening and early detection
- Treatment approaches including surgical oncology, medical oncology, biotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, alternative cancer care.
- Nursing management of patient responses including myelosuppression, common clinical problems, vascular devices, nutritional support, oncologic emergencies, sexual issues and vital signs, lab tests and values, psycho/social issues, rehabilitation and palliative care.
