RDTH 223 - Radiobiology and Safety

This is an introductory course that introduces the student to the fundamentals of radiobiology and the effects of radiation on living tissue. This course evaluates the effects of radiation from the cellular level, to the epidemiological effects on communities and potential offspring. Specific topics in radiobiology include basic radiation interactions, cellular biology review, short and long-term effects of radiation, case studies, risk factors, containment and handling of live sources, reduction of patient dose, radiation monitoring and applicable state and federal regulations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the sources/types of radiation and characteristics of each.
  2. Understand the historical developments and the use of radiation.
  3. Explain the therapist’s role in radiation protection.
  4. Discuss monitoring devices and applications.
  5. Discuss state and federal regulations.
  6. Discuss the term dose and exposure and discriminate between the two.
  7. Discuss the effects of radiation on fetal development.
  8. List the effects of high vs. low dose radiation.
  9. Compare and contrast internal vs. external exposure.
  10. Discuss the carcinogenic effects of radiation.
  11. Compare and contrast risk associated with working with radiation to other more risky occupations.
