Introduces physical science concepts and theories pertaining to current applications and trends in physics, chemistry, earth science and astronomy. Includes lab.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Apply the scientific method of inquiry, including analysis based on scientific concepts and observation.
- Apply dimensional analysis to convert physical quantities between the SI and USCS systems of units.
- Describe the history and origins of scientific concepts and principles.
- Solve elementary problems in kinematics and dynamics: motion, force, friction, gravitation, energy, heat, work, power, and simple machines.
- Solve elementary problems involving vibrations, waves, and sound.
- Solve elementary problems involving electricity and electromagnetism.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the organization of the periodic table and how chemical reactions manifest from this organization.
- Understand the link between geologic conditions and rock transformation.
- Evaluate the impact of plate tectonics on Earth’s geological features and natural disasters.
- Evaluate the primary forces shaping the Earth’s surface and their connection to geological features.
- Understand the formation and evolution of celestial bodies within our Solar System, including the Sun, the planets, the moons, the asteroids and the comets.
- Critically evaluate the credibility of scientific sources to support evidence-based arguments on contemporary environmental and societal challenges.
