SMDI 111 - Technology in Smart Manufacturing and Digital Integration

This course is designed to introduce students to technology that is revolutionizing modern manufacturing and logistics centers across global markets. These technologies include; mechatronics, CAD/CAM, robots, programmable automation, cloud technologies, networking, big data and analytics. Students will be introduced to manufacturing processes and mechancial, elelctrical, fluid power, automation and control principles and practices used in advanced manufacturing. The course will prepare students for the SACA, C-101 Certified Industry 4.0 Associate I - Basic Operations certification where they will sit for a proctored exam at the conclusion of the course.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safety hazards and application of safe work practices when working with industrial equipment and hand tools. [c]
  2. Describe how components in modern manufacturing facilities work and communicate with each other. [b, f]
  3. Describe the basic operations of an industrial robot. [b, f]
  4. Describe and solve for basic electrical quantities such as voltage, amperage, resistance, and power. [b, f]
  5. Demonstarte the ability to utilize a mulitmeter to analize a circuit based off of electrical measurements.[b, f]
  6. Describe machine control, machine automation, and electrical control. [b, f]
  7. Demonstrate the ability to interpret schematics. [b, f]
    • Electrical power and ladder control diagrams
    • Fluid power schematics
  8. Explain the function and operation of a programmable logic controller in an advananced manufacturing facility. [b, f]
  9. Perform basic prevenative machine maintenance. [b, f] 
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of technical math, US customary, metric system, and metrology. [e, f]
  11. Recall fundamental content to meet/exceed the cut-score for the SACA (Smart Automation Certification Alliance) C-101 - Certified Industry 4.0 Associate I - Basic Operations - Silver Certification. [h]
  12. Demonstrate skills to obtain the SACA C-101 - Certified Industry 4.0 Associate I - Basic Operations - Gold Certification at a 100% of skill standard. [a, b, c, e, f, g, h]
  13. Demonstrate the ability to create and interpret technical documents. [f]
  14. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to the course. [a]
