SUST 111 - Wind Turbine Mechanical Systems I

The use and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems found in wind turbine systems. The course will cover general wind turbine systems and operations. Troubleshooting for the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems will be covered.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Convert between metric and English measurement systems.
  2. Differentiate types of bolts, nuts, fasteners, bearings, and other pieces of hardware for machinery.(A,I))
  3. Identify simple machines: lever, pulley, inclined plane, screw, wheel and axle, etc.(A,E)
  4. Explain how simple machines provide mechanical advantage.(E)
  5. Identify bearing components.(E)
  6. Describe importance of lubrication in machines.(E,F,D)
  7. Analyze lubricants.(E,I,D)
  8. Perform an oil change on a machine.(E,I,D)
  9. Determine center of gravity.(E)
  10. Identify anchoring points for machinery lifting.
  11. Inspect ropes, straps, and chains.(I)
  12. Perform crane hand signals.(D)
