TMAS 115 - Ethics and Massage Management


PREREQUISITES: Program Chair Approval and Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in MATH 023 - Essentials of Algebra  or MATH 080 - Mathematical Principles

Provides instruction in ethics and massage management. This course includes professional ethics, relationships and professional boundaries, state and federal legal matters, safety and sanitation regulations and practices, as well as liability-related issues. Also, financial administration, electronic health records and client documentation is discussed. Introduction to taxes and self-employment issues are also explored. Importance of personal professional development including ongoing education and research literacy in the profession is discussed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Define and describe the interpersonal and physical components of a therapeutic environment (E 1.4 I)
  2. Develop and implement strategies to address challenging client-therapist interactions (E 2.1 V)
  3. Assess personal needs, behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge relevant to the practice of massage therapy and bodywork (E 3.1 I)
  4. Identify how personal and cultural values, attitudes, and ethics influence professional values, attitudes and ethics (E 3.1 II)
  5. Define and demonstrate active listening, rapport, empathy and feedback (E 4.1 I).
  6. Identify strategies to effectively deal with emotional and behavioral client responses to massage therapy and bodywork treatment (E 4.1 II)
  7. Describe the principles of conflict resolution and apply conflict resolution skills effectively in the client-therapist relationship (E 4.1 III)
  8. Identify the qualities and characteristics of boundaries (E 4.2 I)
  9. Identify cultural differences related to boundary issues (E 4.2 II)
  10. Define and discuss the differences between a personal and a professional relationship (E 4.2 III)

  12. Define and discuss transference and countertransference (E 4.2 V)
  13. Identify and describe the purpose of a code of ethics (E 4.3 I)
  14. Identify and describe the purpose of Standards of Practice specific to massage therapy and bodywork (E 4.3 II)
  15. Identify confidentiality principles related to massage therapy and bodywork practice, including requirements for HIPAA compliance (E 4.3 III)
  16. Identify common ethical situations in massage therapy and bodywork (E 4.3 IV)
  17. Describe processes by which to effectively resolve ethical issues (E 4.3 V)
  18. Identify common business practices and structures in massage therapy and bodywork practice (E 5.1 I)
  19. Identify and design effective methods for time management, client scheduling, and maintenance of the work environment (E.5.1.II).
  20. Create a business plan or outline an employment strategy, including short and long-term professional goals (E 5.1 III)
  21. Identify the basic aspects of legal agreements, contracts, employment agreements and professional insurance (E 5.1 IV)
  22. Identify basic principles of accounting and bookkeeping suitable for various business structures (E 5.1 V)
  23. Create, maintain and identify legal requirements of retaining client, financial and tax records (E 5.1 VI)
  24. Demonstrate knowledge of federal, state and local regulations as they pertain to massage therapy and bodywork practice (E 5.1 VII)
  25. Demonstrate knowledge of ADA requirements and their implication for massage therapy and bodywork practice (E 5.1 VIII)
  26. Identify the elements of effective job search and marketing materials (such as resumes, brochures, business cards) (E 5.2 I)
  27. Identify and discuss common methods of marketing for massage therapy and bodywork (E 5.2 II)
  28. Identify strategies to develop and maintain a client base (E 5.2 III)
  29. Identify strategies for effective communication with other professionals regarding client care and referrals (E 5.3 I)
  30. Describe the appropriate use of medical release and consent forms (E 5.3 III)
  31. Discuss the process for establishing and maintaining professional relationships in the workplace (E 5.4 I)
  32. Discuss strategies for establishing and maintaining professional relations with peers and with other professionals (E 5.4 II)
