TMAS 125 - Asian Healing Arts Theory and Methods PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading PROGRAM: Therapeutic Massage CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2019
Introduces the student to information and treatments designed around the approach of Asian medicine including energy systems, meridians, and the five elements theory. The basics of Shiatsu are included. Additional supervised table hours of practice outside of class are required and will be determined by the instructor.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify energy systems in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Locate and classify meridians and pressure points in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Identify the concepts of the five-element theory in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Apply techniques of acupressure treatment.
- Describe the philosophy and practice of Shiatsu.
- Discuss the history and progression of Asian Healing Arts.
- Demonstrate basic full body routine of palming, thumbing and stretching.
- Demonstrate integrative chair routine.
- Demonstrate integrative table routine.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Auricular therapy
- Exercises to increase energy flow in each meridian
- Centering
- Five-element theory
- Flow of energy through the body
- Governing vessel
- Grounding
- Integration of acupressure and massage
- Pressure points
- Rotations
- Stretching
- Twelve meridian line pairs
- Various Asian massage therapies, i.e., Shiatsu, Thai, and Acupressure
- Yin and Yang concepts
