TMAS 201 - Sports Massage and Therapeutic Modalities


PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: TMAS 140 - Therapeutic Massage Training II

Presents a specific application of massage therapy designed to train the therapist in the treatment of athletes. Includes pre-event and post-event techniques, general maintenance massage, and therapeutic exercises. First aid for sports injuries and the use of hydrotherapies and other therapeutic modalities will be explored. Education on contraindications, including drug and supplement interactions, as they impact massage is learned. Additional supervised table hours of practice outside of class are required and will be determined by the instructor.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe various hot and cold hydrotherapy techniques (such as hot or cold packs, immersion baths, paraffin, ice massage) (E 2.4 I)
  2. Identify the indications, contraindications, precautions, effects and uses of hydrotherapy techniques (E 2.4 II)
  3. Identify the physiological principles and mechanisms involved in effects of hydrotherapy (E 2.4 III)
  4. Describe appropriate methods of hygiene and sanitation for hydrotherapy applications (E 2.4 IV)
  5. Discuss basic first aid applications.
  6. Demonstrate and discuss the mechanisms and results of sports injuries, i.e. stress during major sporting events.
  7. Demonstrate and discuss the interaction between the massage therapist and other sports medicine professionals.
  8. Demonstrate utilization of therapeutic stretching exercises for the athlete.
  9. Demonstrate the techniques for preparation of the athlete for competition: pre-event, event, post-event and general maintenance massage therapy.
  10. Discuss the effects of sports massage and various therapeutic applications such as ultrasound, hydrotherapies and electrotherapy techniques.
  11. Discuss the effects and uses of rehabilitative sports massage.
