Helps practitioners apply deeper techniques in the body therapy releasing chronically held tissue from past trauma, illness, or recent injury. Discusses the use of various treatment modalities. Deep tissue techniques include compression and compression with stroke. Indications, contraindications and precautions, including drugs and supplements, for deeper strokes is taught. Additional supervised table hours of practice outside of class are required and will be determined by the instructor.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Perform assessment and data collection: (E. 1.6 II)
- History taking
- Observation
- Palpation
- Functional testing
- Pain assessment
- Demonstrate techniques that are appropriate for each body area, including endangerment sites (E 2.2 IV)
- Discuss the value of ongoing education and skill development as a professional (E 6.2 I)
- Describe methods for identifying advanced training programs to enhance performance, knowledge and skills (E 6.2 II)
- Describe and demonstrate techniques that release tension related to chronic or acute injuries.
- Discuss the principles of deep tissue work.
- Identify indications, contraindications and precautions for deeper strokes.
- Perform full assessment and data collection with clients to determine treatment plans.
- Discuss body-mind relationships to tension and pain.
- Discuss the importance of structural alignment.
- Demonstrate deep tissue techniques with proper positioning and body mechanics.
- Demonstrate knowledge of muscle anatomy including location and palpation of deep muscles.
- Perform a deep tissue massage based on client intake and treatment plan.
