TRCK 101 - Steering and Suspension Systems

Studies steering, and suspension systems commonly used on modern tractors and trailers. Study will include steering and suspension components, power steering units, alignment theory and procedures, tire repair and service, and wheel balancing. Diagnosis, repair, and servicing of components including modern air suspension systems will be emphasized.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:- Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while in the labs. (a)
- Identify tools used for steering and suspension repair. (b)
- Disable supplemental restraint systems in accordance with manufacturers’ procedures. (a,e,f)
- Diagnose power steering systems and determine need for replacement. (e,f)
- Diagnose steering and suspension components to determine need for replacement. (b,c,e,f)
- Remove and replace steering and suspension components. (e,f)
- Describe steering and alignment geometry. (e,f)
- Perform pre-alignment checks according to industry standards. (e,f)
- Diagnose rear suspension system and determine needed service or repair. (b,c,e,f)
- Check and adjust all alignment angles and measurements. (b,c,e,f)
- Inspect, rotate, mount, and balance tires. (a,b,e,f)
- Repair tire leaks. (a,b,e,f)
- Inspect, service, and replace front leaf spring bushings, pins, and shackles. (e,f)
- Inspect and service air springs. (e,f)
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair air ride systems. (b,e,f)
- Inspect and service kingpins. (a,b,e,f)
