Theory of Operation, Diagnosis, and Overhaul Procedures related to automatic transmissions and electronically automated standard transmissions. Course includes service of torque converters, automatic transmissions, and maintenance procedures of automatic transmissions.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while repairing automatic transmissions.
  2. Identify tools, equipment, and pullers used in the repair of automatic transmissions.
  3. Identify and describe the function of automatic transmission parts and torque convertor components.
  4. Removal, operation, and installation of a class 5, 6, 7, or 8 truck automatic transmissions.
  5. Diagnose shifting related concerns.
  6. Disassemble, inspect, determine needed action, and reassemble a class 5, 6, 7, or 8 truck automatic transmissions.
  7. Diagnose, repair, or replace Auto-Shift components.
  8. Tear down and inspect a torque convertor assembly to manufacturer’s specifications.
  9. Demonstrate planetary gear operation.
  10. Demonstrate hydraulic flow of an automatic transmission and torque convertor.
  11. Inspect flex plate and bell housing alignment.
