VISC 114 - Graphic Design I PREREQUISITES: VISC 101 - Design Fundamentals and VISC 115 - Vector Graphics & Pub Design I PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: VISC 113 - Typography or Program Chair Approval

Provides introductory instruction in design for communication. Teaches design process as a means to develop effective communications for global, corporate and social application. Produces samples for student portfolios, which may include elements or comprehensive projects in logo, stationery, posters, newspaper, magazine, billboard, and interface design, etc.
REQUIRED SOFTWARE:
This class makes use of industry-standard Adobe software. Students will NOT be able to complete the coursework without the use of Adobe software. Only students enrolled in Visual Communications courses that use Adobe software have been assigned an Adobe license. Not all students will have the ability to access Adobe software at home. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the latest Adobe software. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Please note that not every computer can run Adobe software. Verify your system can operate Adobe applications through the Adobe System Requirements website. We highly recommend computers with an Intel core processor, 64-bit support, 8GB of memory (16GB preferred), and a 250GB hard drive. All Visual Communications labs are outfitted with the minimum system requirements.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Create portfolio quality projects by applying design and printing processes.
- Develop marketing concepts by completing creative briefs based on global, corporate and social applications and target audience.
- Visualize ideas by means of research, thumbnail sketches, and developmental drafts.
- Identify print reproduction criteria necessary for various media.
- Adhere to a production schedule to meet deadlines in an efficient and professional manner.
- Present and provide feedback to peers, clients, faculty, or advisors.
