WELD 206 - Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: WELD 108 - Shielded Metal Arc Welding I
PROGRAM: Industrial Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 LAB HOURS MIN: 4 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2024
This course provides comprehensive instruction on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) equipment and products used to produce groove type butt and fillet welds. Students will engage in extensive hands-on practice to develop the skills necessary to achieve industry-standard welds. Safety hazards and safe practices in arc welding are emphasized. In addition, students will attempt mandatory certification assessment through AWS, American Welding Society.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
1. Describe differences in currents and polarities; AC, DC Reverse and DC Straight. [e,f]
2. Apply safe practices and demonstrate proper use of SMAW equipment. [e,f]
3. Describe the AWS electrode identification system for SMAW process. [e,f]
4. Perform multi-pass fillet SMAW welds in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions to meet industry standards. [e,f]
5. Perform SMAW welds increasing in length through the semester to minimum of 8 inches. [e, f]
6. Perform SMAW welds on materials of varying thicknesses, adjusting technique to accommodate material properties. [e, f]
7. Describe how to control magnetic arc blow in DC SMAW welding. [e,f]
8. Perform Groove SMAW welds in all positions. [e,f]
9. Perform air carbon arc gouging on steel groove welds. [e,f]
10. Describe heat input and metal warpage and distortion. [e,f]
11. Describe methods of destructive and non-destructive testing. [e,f]
12. Demonstrate ability to prepare weldments and attempt to earn a nationally recognized certification from AWS [e, f]
13. Demonstrate proficiency in reading and interpreting technical documents relevant to SMAW processes.. [b,e]
14. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]
